Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Prepare for movement of pigs
  • Identify and follow biosecurity procedures that apply to entering and working on a pork production site
  • Confirm pigs to be moved, their current location, their destination and timing of the move
  • Confirm enterprise animal welfare and biosecurity requirements for pig movement
  • Identify health and safety hazards, assess risks and control and/or report risks prior to commencing tasks
  • Select, prepare and fit appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) required for the tasks and conditions
  • Check gates and/or pathways/routes for clear access, and readiness of destination to receive pigs
  • Advise other workers of upcoming pig movement as required
  • Determine pigs to be moved individually and/or in groups
  • Handle, move and/or lift pigs using safe manual handling techniques, and low stress animal handling techniques
  • Monitor pig behaviour during all handling and moving activities, and identify and respond to situations and hazards that arise to avoid or minimise injury to self, others and pigs
  • Report and seek assistance from supervisor for incidents and/or risks beyond level of own responsibility

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts.
